Raleigh was named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the famed English soldier, adventurer, and poet. It is the capital of North Carolina and home to North Carolina State University , the state's largest university, as well as two historically black universities (Shaw University and Saint Augustine's College ), and two liberal arts colleges (Meredith College , which is a women's college, and William Peace University , which recently became coeducational.)
